Interviewing a property developer – how we started our journey
Our Managing Director, Andy Churchill, and Acquisitions Director, Andy Watts, were recently invited to appear on the Progressive Property Podcast to talk all about their journeys into the world of property.
Read on to find out more about where they both experienced their first taste of property and how Earl & Pelham Property has grown into one of the most trusted developers in the East Midlands.
The first rungs on the property ladder
It might surprise you to know, but Andy C came into the property game slightly late. “I was what many schools would say as ‘academically challenged’,” he remarked in his interview. “I didn’t go the traditional O-Levels, university, degree, work route.”
“Academia is not built to help people with natural ability elsewhere,” he went on. “A lot of property is common sense. That, and the determination to succeed, is more valuable than qualifications.”
By contrast, Andy W got his first property at the age of 15, thanks to his parents. “The house we were about to move into needed a whole rewire and refurb,” he told the Podcast. “We had to do literally everything.”
Following this experience, Andy then went on to renovate a family friend’s flat in 2008. “I had to really step up and take action,” he explained. “I talked to local builders – people I could trust – and it all came together.”
The importance of family
Andy and Andy have much more in common than their names. Both are incredibly family-orientated, something which has carried on into their work here at Earl & Pelham Property. In fact, Andy W and his six boys were all heavily involved in one of Andy’s first buy-to-let projects in 2011 and previously worked within his family’s business.
“Even though I was ill at the time, I still took my family to paint and decorate,” he revealed in his interview. “I wanted to do more with the family business and secure a future for them. But in the end, I realised I needed to change.”
Andy C also has a family connection to property. He and his wife have an impressive portfolio together and he has also worked on a house with his parents, during which the property was stripped out and renovated. Just like his colleague, Andy C also had a realisation that something had to change.
“I wasn’t happy in a corporate situation that I was in,” he explained. “I was offered the choice to leave, so I did, and set up my own business doing refurbs. It was the hardest decision to make, up to the point of making it, when I realised it was actually the easiest.”
From then to now
After a chance encounter, the two set up Earl & Pelham Property in 2015 and have gone from strength to strength. Using the power of networking and their expansive knowledge of the property circle, Andy and Andy are excited about what the future holds for Earl & Pelham.
“I like meeting people and the idea of going through the front door of a project,” Andy W explained. “And Earl & Pelham Property is perfect for that! We’re building a lot in Nottinghamshire which we hope will bring tourism and opportunities.”
“Business is all about relationships,” Andy C added. “And networking is so important – I’m a natural extrovert so I love it! We’ve had to start small but we’ve built up and our track record has grown. Now we can target those bigger projects. It’s busy, but a very good busy!”
